Wow, I haven't posted in this thread for more than two years! Well, now that I have finally released my very first model to the Steam workshop I thought I'd blow off the dust and show you what I have been working on. Unfortunately mapping takes so much time which I don't have so that I have switched to creating models. I hope you can forgive me for never actually finishing one of my maps. Now here's my list of new items:

Bonk! Sugar Slushie

Nice! I'd use it rather than most of the other Scout hats.

Post a wireframe, there's no way that should be using that many polies.

That's better.

Now first off.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3332789/hatfix.png

The edge loops indicated in red should not exist. The variation in the shape is unnecessary detail that will never ever be noticed on such a small object, on a character that is always moving.

There is also a vertex on the top that should be removed. Finally, the hat should be altered to fit the class, instead of having the underside, visible, not only is this increasing the poly count on rarely seen polygons, it also makes the hat look lose, like it would have trouble staying on the player in the first place.

Additionally you could probably get away with a few less sides on your cylinder.

Good job!
You can send it to valve so that all of us could get hats like that!
Can't wait!

I agree with the kiwi on this one.

What do you think why he made that? :D

He just wants to get another hat, as if 9 were not enough D:

Urr it's not 9 hats dude. Unless you mean he's got 9 hats.

I didn't just make this hat to "get it" ...it's because I like to create maps & models - that's why I'm here at all.

That's better.

Agreed, I could get away with less polygons but I simply chose not to. I'm still under the limit of 800 and most of valve's hats use more than 1000 polygons. I also agree that the proportions of the hat may not be perfect to fit the scout's head but I don't have a model of the hatless scout to create one that's fitting exactly.

The inside of the hat has to be created because it won't stay on the player's head when he dies (it falls off and rolls around).

I didn't consider it falling off, so you have a point there.

Now about the second part, valve's hats also are usually a lot more than modified cylinders, the point I'm making is that you can have way fewer faces in there, and the difference will be completely unnoticeable, at this point those faces are all wasted. Just because you're under the limit does not mean that you shouldn't be removing unnecessary faces :/

Very cool hat man. I hope Valve obliges you.

Hello Gadget, nice job
Here are the french names you asked
The scout doorman's hat is called "Chapeau de groom"
The spy's one (policeman hat) is called "Képi". There are not used by the national police itself but by the gendarmerie and the army officers. But well, who cares :)

I'd kill for the french Police Hat. It looks great and is quite different.

Nice hats, especially the spy hat. But is there a way to make the triangles on the peak look better, they are really visible in that picture.

Fixed. I didn't know about smoothing groups - now I do. Also updated the first post with another hat.

I suspect it's neither the first nor the last beret, I'm afreaid. I'd also like to see a backwards baseball cap/hat.

Updated with a hat for the soldier. Here's another shot from behind with the blue skin:

Glad to see you made something that wasn't a modified cylinder finally!

As before, there are still a few triangles you could chop off and not have a different, but if your previous responses were any indication, you don't care because you weren't over the limit!

Now for starts, the top, needs to be changed, the edges all go to one vertex and that's giving you a lot of wonky shapes and lighting issues.

Cut some new edges, so that they're not making a sharp edge right to the middle and you should be good.

Glad to see you made something that wasn't a modified cylinder finally!...

Just for your interest: I'm using curves to create the basic hat shape. That's way faster than modifiying cylinders. ...I'm not a total noob, you know ;)

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not totally happy with the top shape either and I'm probably going to spend some more time with those edges later.

You should put some more words before the first table. The later pages are getting messed up because the top-of-thread-snippet is grabbing the opening table tag and not the closing one.

You're probably fixing this but the heavy's beard looks weird. An improved texture might fix the facial hair models.

Updated the first post with the rest of the beard collection. (Scout and Pyro won't get a beard)

Thanks to Daimao's help you can now also test them out in game. (See first post for download)

*Edit: Added downloads for three hats.
