and my first glimpse into just how much a pain in the ass these things are to get in game and on the head.
Tell me about it. I have a 'test' hat that just won't appear for the heavy :(
Anyway, nice first hat, I think it will have a strong chance of being ingame, it's great quality, original and funny.

As RED Pyro, just click B to throw a fireball. As a BLU Pyro, just click B to throw an ice ball. Shaking the Wiimote is also acceptable.

As an optimization thing too, you could probably get away with less sides on those goggle cylinders without any noticeable difference, but that's only a minor gripe really.

Looks good! Though the texture is a bit too detailed for the pyro's head. I'd at least change the strap to a solid color.

I'd change the strap to a constant colour and skin the helmet part instead. Incidentally, how do you get the hats to work from Blender, I'm having a hell of a time messing around with bones and rotation trying to get my one even close to the demoman's head.

To be honest, it's a massive pain in the ass. The last hat I did had me making fine adjustments to the smd to get it in place.

Yeah, my one is currently massively underscaled, in the wrong rotation on 2 axes, and in the middle of his head. Not that it matters, because Valve should do that bit for me :).

Alot of my work in getting the hat onto the head of a class is guesswork. It would be nearly impossible to make a proper tutorial for it.

With today's update I thought I'd take the time to finish the aviators helm. Thanks to a different exporter I can now add jigglebones to my models.

Which one do you mean? The flower is straight out ridiculous, and the aviator's cap is a bit of irony, because the pyro already has goggles.

Not really an item, but it's something I'd like to pursue for future applications.

I created a fluid simulation of a sphere impacting a body of "water". Baked it out into an animation and found the frame I liked. I then converted the body of fluid into a mesh and then cleaned up all the unneeded polygons. I then unwrapped it and then baked AO.

I can now paint it up using textures for use in anything I need it.

Here's what it looked like before cleanup.

Out of curiosity I wanted to see just how viable the export to dxf function was for exporting and then converting brushwork to models.

It works quite well and you can make some rather decent models. I'm looking for more things to convert if anyone wants anything converted to a model.

I think maybe you should skin the test tubes so maybe with different colours and varying amounts of liquid so if you placed more than one it wouldn't look so similar.

Why even add the cuts :V and I still say you should either normal map the indentation on the blade, or just paint it into the texture and not have a normal at all.

The blade looks pretty perfect... but honestly the knife itself is kinda boring, I mean sure the shotguns and pistols are kinda bland but shouldn't there be something to make the knife stand out? Tape 3 of them together?

Nice work :) Would be nice to see it as an ingame model though.

My idea for the knife's abilities and name:

The Sharp Avenger
+ Damage dealt to opponents that killed you before are mini-crits
+ Damage dealt to opponents that dominate you are crits
- 15 % Speed on wearer

Would make a nice weapon ^^ But I think your ideas will be better than mine.

the Bowmans Bowie:
-shortened melee range
-30% damage dealt
+extra 10% damage for each of your arrows stuck in enemy

need a name for this one:
-35-40% damage dealt
+50-60% damage dealt while capping a point/carrying intel/pushing the cart/when you're the last man alive in Arena

wait wait wait. you dont have the soldiers bow? its got a laser scope and a 600% crit rate. you can craft one out of every hat in the game plus 18 refined metal.

I wanted to release my Potted Poppy publicly, but I lost the .blend, so I thought I would just remake it.

Currently just flat colors on an AO bake, with some dirt texture for the soil. It'll have jiggle bones when done, and replace most the Pyro hats.

The pedals need to be closer together like in the original and the crack is too wide, no way that dirt is staying in there.

You've never actually planted a potted plant before? The dirt holds it's shape quite well, even outside of the pot.

maybe you could make the crack a bit more appealing. not just one straight down cut. but a little crack here and a little crack there to help selling it as an actual crack ?

In actual gameplay you never get close to the crack to see any of the detail I actually put in there. It would be a waste of polygons, and a bunch more work for me.

Well i was gonna suggest the opposite. Remove the crack's 3D work and just paint a crack on with some black/normal map.

If no one gets close enough to see it what's the point in having that much detail.

Maybe just have a notch in the rim at the top where it's more visually obvious/directly affects the siluette of the model, then use a black illustrative fork lighting-ish line work representing the continuation of the crack through the pot.

that visible crack adds like 10 polygons whatsoever. even if it were 100 it wouldn't matter much in todays computer world. a normal map for that hat would be more expensive than these couple old polygons ;)

almost every detail from almost every hat can't be seen if not upclose. it's the point of cool gimmicky things to present some cool thing when you come close to it..

I'd basically have to redo the entire bottom of the model, and texture to add in more detail to the crack. Way more work for something I don't feel is worth it.

Only the w_models work for all classes cause Valve was lazy and decided to still use the w_model for the engie's shotgun rather than the c_model.

I've never animated one of my models. With the c_model system, you just create the corresponding bones, and vertex groups, and the game does the rest.
