Gaming Night V Recap:
Honestly I could not tell you I was actually not there for 99.9% of it. I just got a new desk, a new epicly large desk and was busy working on assembling it in my room (like seriously epic, I started cleaning last night at 7:00 pm, worked this morning until 11:00 am, finished cleaning by 1:00 pm, started moving pieces into my room, finished assembling / moving my computer back in at 6:30 pm). However when I did go to join it seems that the server ones again needed a kick in the arse and nobody gave it one. Mayhaps I could be made an admin so I can kick it in the arse every once in a while?

If you are submitting a map, please do one of the following:
Include a link to a publicly released version
If there is no publicly released version send either me or DrPepper a forum PM (or contact me on steam) containing a link to a version that we can post onto the server.
*note* we will most likely NOT have a password on the server so any maps submitted can still be download by the general public and there is a chance they might like it enough to try and post it to the internet without first asking permission. Keep this in mind.

Negatory for several reasons.
1. I like them
2. Other people like them
3. Other people KNOW them
4. They bring other people onto the server
5. I like them
6. I dont like castle, but I do not deny your right to submit it :)
7. Yes, I said I like them twice.
Also, while I have met many people that dont like Well and hydro, there have only been a couple that have said they dont like 2fort and so far. I cant think of anyone else who has said they did not like granary. I was actually thinking it would be fun to toss in dustbowl.

its ok if u like them, but i was just saying i dont, hence IMO which means "in my opinion". ok, i take back that all of them suck, 2fort is the only one i like enough to go out of my way to play it. i dont mind playing the others, i just don t like them much, and the fact that playing Valves maps doesnt help custom mappers at all :D

But it does help them (and if you can't tell I love lists)
The valve maps are excellent examples of well designed maps and many custom mappers would do well to learn from them.
It brings people onto custom maps servers, some will stick around for the custom maps rotations.

Is this gaming night going to be sister-hosted by Youme's server? I'll get a horrible ping in the US server

I dont think so. From what i hear a map killed the TF2maps.net server last time and no one was around to kick it in the arse and I think the last one was more of an experiment to see if we could do two servers at once. I think that for now since we only have 12 confirmed people attending, 2 servers at the same time is not going to happen.
One idea I had was to have game day start on Youme's server from 4:00 pm GMT - 9:00 pm GMT, then have the game day move over to the US server from 9:00 GMT (which is 4:00 pm EST, 1:00 PM PST) onward. That way the Europeans get to play for a bit on a local server at reasonable times, then for later times we move to the US server.

Probably, I dont really have control over what actually goes onto the server, but I can update the first post with a link to your new version with a note saying it was updated.

Its 3:00 pm EST right now, I am at work but will be leaving soon. There is a "major" snow storm happening so the idiot drivers in Cincinnati are probably going to be goign 10-15 mph the entire way home.
If traffic were completely clear I could get from where I work to home in about 35 minutes, on a normal day it takes me 45-50 minutes to get home. Last year we had 6 inches of snow and it took me over 4 hours to get home. Earlier this year we had 4 inches of snow and it took me 2 1/2 hours.
So, what i am trying ot say is even if I leave here at 3:30 pm, I will probably not be arriving home at a reasonable hour and will not be updating the main post with new maps. So I am still considering map submissions closed at 5:00 pm EST, but I will not be here to announce the closing and I will not be updating the main post after 3:30 pm to reflect new maps.
So DrPepper or ImmortalD, whoever updates the server rotation, please take into account maps submitted before you do the uploading that are posted in this thread but not updated in the main post. ( I think I am caught up to the time of this post)

Uploading something to tf2maps.net now... =\
EDIT: Ok maybe not. The forum uploader doesn't like me anymore and won't let me upload. In the meantime, I have it hosted on my own space, but if too many people download it, it could be bad...
At any rate, I nominate cp_science2_b2 (http://tf2maps.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=190) for gameday tomorrow, if you don't mind a nomination that's a half hour late. =(
I really am looking for feedback on how the layout change affects gameplay. I've seen evidence that it really helps promote conflict between points 3 and 4, but I worry that the bases may be too easy to assault now once you've taken point 4.

Common sense actually says "No Youme, no server admin, no players on server, no map in list currently playing: no server".
Youme
03-08-2008, 05:52 PM
Dunno what the no map thing is about, perhaps the server was changing map?
but you dont really need an admin handy, and if lots of you pile on one of the other colts playground guys is sure to be on there after a short while, I'm not the only admin ya know.
The server runs 24/7 customs, from now on common sense should dictate that.
Shmitz
03-08-2008, 07:00 PM
Sure, customs, but there's a list of maps we're supposed to be playing in the first post. The Colt's Playground server was on cp_roswell_b2, which while I sure wouldn't mind playing on, isn't on that list. So we had nothing to indicate that it was, in fact, ready, and that it would be rotating through that list of maps.

Doesn't matter who is right or wrong here gents. Here is what I got out of today's failure:
I had to set my Steam to auto-retry to even get into the TF2Maps server. It was full and stayed that way for a good amount of time. Our biggest problem was making sure we have interest in testing out custom maps....looks like the interest is there gents.
Isn't that all that matters?
MacNetron
03-09-2008, 06:05 AM
There is a difference in playing or testing custom maps. I think gameday is meant for playing (custom) maps.
If you really want to test them for usable feedback, gameday is not the best option.
Then you need 'Testday'. Why, because I imagine you want some rules like:
- first 5 minutes / first round is for just looking at the map for irregularites (like textures)
- testing balance red/blue
- last round, give feedback (by console or voice -> voice audible for both teams).
etc.
Note, this doesn't mean no custom maps and no testing at all on Gameday, but the main focus is playing
Youme
03-09-2008, 07:52 AM
Aye, I think that the gameday should be primarily for playing and enjoyment whilst testing should be for other occasions.
Thats not to say you cant point out flaws in the maps whilst playing, just the main focus should be enjoying the map. (And not just saying 'Next map already'....SOTD!!!!)
On a different note:
In the interest of preserving the gamesdays perhaps more admins should be made for the TF2maps.net server, say more prominant members, so that even if the main site guys arent there it doesnt fall through.
This is pretty much what we do on all the colts playground server, whilst you lot will think of me as the admin for our custom map lab server, there are about 30-40 others and about 10-15 others who have just as much, if not more, power to change maps, kick/ban, start votes....etc. Whilst you might think that this would cause clashes when two admins are on and they want to do different things but it doesn't, we make compromises so that as many players stay happy as posible.
Shmitz

I think gameday is meant for playing (custom) maps.
I have to disagree. If gameday were for just playing, there would be no point in having members of the community nominate their maps for playing on. We could all just pile on whatever custom map server happened to be available and it wouldn't matter what maps got played.
It would be a terrible waste of opportunity to get solid feedback from other mappers if gameday were "just for playing".

How about then : "Gameday is for playing (OUR) (custom) maps." ? :)

I am sorry about the last couple game days. Last week my computer / desk / room was in pieces and I did not get it all back together until to late, and this week I was stuck at a friends house in a Level 3 snow emergency.
DJive and Me are both waiting to hear back from DrPepper about getting the forum Moderators added as Admins on the TF2maps.net server. I think if that gets done then Game Days will go a lot smoother.
As for what maps to play I think that ideally Game day has multiple purposes:
Play custom maps from our members in all stages of completion.
You slapped together a concept and want to see how it works? Great, we will at least play a round or two to let you know how it works
You have been working on a map for months and finally want some game feedback? Great, we will play it and suggest tweaks to your map.
You have made a map, consider it finished and just want other people to play it? Sweet, we will kill each other, maybe complain a bit, but keep the criticism constructive.
Play maps that people really enjoy, but dont get to play that often.
These can be custom maps that other people have made that you really like, submit them and We will fit them into the rotation. (PS. I really like custom CTF maps)
Get less active Steam Group members to play with us. These are the people that just joined the group but have not been active. They will get a Steam Group alert saying that we are playing together as a group. Even if just one out of 50 come join us that is 4 inactive people hanging out with us, with the potential of them becoming active.
Get people that dont even know about us, but like to play custom maps to see our server online and come play with us. Maybe one or two will stop by the chat room or stop by the forums. Either way we gain a couple new people and more people hear about us.
Just play maps you / I / the person next to you, likes. So for me, I really like 2Fort and Gravelpit. I like playing with all you guys so I will probably submit those two for most game days. Maybe for the next game day I will put it up for a vote to see if people really dont want them to be there. I feel they should be there because:
I like them
Other people like them
It brings new blood onto the server
Said new blood will *hopefully* stick around for the custom rounds. So, again, I just want to say I am sorry that this last game day was a complete bust and while I appreciate Youme's enthusiam, I think the bigger issue is getting our server to reliably host custom maps, and ESPECIALLY being up and running the correct rotation on game day.
