Game Day Part IX Recap
Went fairly well, I was not available for the UK portion however it looks like despite some server issues most things went well.
As for the US portion I was there for most of it and it seems to have gone off pretty gorsh darn well.
Game Days Part X - April 19th and 20th.
** Advanced Disclaimer: This event is mainly to have fun, so all rules stated in this thread can, and probably will, be broken. **
When
USA Server - April 19th @ 4:00 pm EST, 1:00 pm PST, and 9:00 pm GMT
UK Server - April 20th @ 5:00 pm GMT, 12:00 pm EST, 9:00 am PST (ouch)
This time is a proposed time, since I think if we are playing on a UK server we should have it at more of a UK time frame. Also bear in mind that my time zone calculations can be kinda iffy.
Where (aka, Server section)
Server configuration request / statement:
rtv turned off please
30 minute map rounds
Start with testing maps, 30 minutes a map flexibly guaranteed. (aka if something goes wrong dont hate us)
April 19th: TF2Maps.net Official Server: 8.12.19.105:27015 (steam://connect/8.12.19.105:27015)
April 20th: TF2Maps.net partner server Colt's Playground: 84.45.84.166:27015 (steam://connect/84.45.84.166:27015)
Links should connect you straight to the servers.
Maps:
*note* we will NOT have a password on the server so any maps submitted can still be download by the general public and there is a chance they might like it enough to try and post it to the internet without first asking permission. Keep this in mind.
Map Submission Protocol
All debate over what maps are submitted, what maps are played, etc must be handled in this thread PRIOR to the game day. Once the map submission deadline is passed the rotation is set. Map rotation changes should not happen on the actual game day, you will have multiple days to air your woes prior to the actual game day.
There will be two parts to the game day:
Map Testing
General get together where we play maps requested by our members in this thread.
Map Testing will take place first, all maps submitted for testing purposes with receive 30 minutes of play time. Map testing slots will be assigned as maps come in.
During General get together we will play the maps requested in this thread
Please include the following information when submitting a map:
Map Name (ex. ctf_CoolestMapEver_b1)
Link to map download (ex. http://www.coolsite.com/ctf_coolestMapEver_b1.bsp )
Map is for testing: Yes / No
Optional: Map Discussion thread

Map list is up to date as of now.
If you say your going to have a map available for download later, please make sure it IS available. If its not it will just end up screwing up the schedule and be a pain in the arse to fix. This will aggravate me as it makes me have to do additional reconfiguring at the last minute.

Just so we are clear, saying you will have a map uploaded is a binding agreement, you say it will be there, it had better be there by the deadline. I have not decided on the repercussion, but I will think of something unpleasant.
Sorry if I am sounding like a dick on this but I want things to go as smoothly as possible and if I need to make lots of changes at the last minute I am not going to be happy at all.

Post Updated.
Just so we are clear, all times unless otherwise stated are in EST in the original post. Therefore, when I say:
[ 7:30 pm | 3:30 pm] - Nosher - Call2Arms_Alpha_V2 (http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=1720)
What this means is:
[ April 19th Time - 7:30 pm EST | April 20th Time - 3:30 pm EST] - by the user Nosher - with the map named this, linked to the download.
Also, if you submit a map, it automatically goes into testing for both days, you dont need to specify a day. This will give you more feedback and give more people a chance to play your map.
Finally, in this post I want to remind TheBladeRoden, MangyCarface, and R3dRuM that you need to post a link to your maps no later than 4:30 pm tomorrow. As in Friday. As in April 18th. As in if you don't, you are going to piss me off and I might skip over your future submissions for game days. If you can not be bothered to upload your maps, I cant be bothered to ensure that they get on the server in the future.
GET YOUR MAPS FINISHED OR I WILL GOUGE OUT YOUR EYEBALLS WITH A RUSTY SPOON.

Yeah, I think for the next game day I am going to say that if you dont have a download link, then you aint getting put on the schedule until you have a download link. Kinda screws the people who wait over and encourages people to submit their map even if they are not sure if they can get a playable copy out by the deadline.

pity about the crashing with sidewinder. Since then I haven't been able to download the mines map though and I know at least one other person who can't download it either... :(

As for the statement that "Several Maps" had download problems, the only one that had a problem that i know of is Mines, (I did miss the last 4 maps though). And as DJive stated, it was a redirect problem on the fast download side of things.

Allow me to apologise early guys :( I am so very sorry that the server was crashing again tonight for the first hour. switching source tv off seemed to fix it :(
We spent hours yesterday rebuilding it and making sure it all worked - it did when we tested. There's no good reason why its happenning - its a quad core xeon with 4g ram on a 100meg datacenter connection.
nothing in the logs explains whats happenning. we run 4 other servers with no problems whatsoever - it seems a little odd that source tv was causing it = well investigate further. Anyway, i was pleased it only lasted an hour and that the rest seemd to go smoothly so far.
we are working very hard to resolve it, but can quite understand how annoying it is! Believe me, I feel close to tears of anger - remember that gif of the guy typing till his arms bleed off - now picture Arma and I trying to sort the server out tonight :(

@ Colt, I was busy today so I missed the gameday so I cant say for sure about todays event, but I know that during Saturdays event we had a problem on two different maps and crashing problems that were tied to the maps themselves and not necessarily to the server.
Randdalf

I was only there for the buggy (lots of restarts) beginning, but it looked like a really good way of testing out maps. I'm going to submit ctf_downpour_b1 for the next gameday.
VelvetFistIronGlove
04-21-2008, 03:49 PM
No, ryodoan, this was something else, and not specific to any map. The server would crash after anything from 2 minutes to half an hour into a map. And after turning SourceTV off it was stable again (although I think we had a crash again on spywinder_gamedayx, which was a map that also crashed on Saturday).
So, great thanks to Colt Seavers and Arma for working hard to sort this out.
Unfortunately, it also meant that we didn't have SourceTV demos available for most of the time, but I did record some demos from my limited POV. I forgot to record on some maps, so I only ended up with demos for cruise, siege, stag, complex, call2arms, bootcamp, and bloodstained. Get them here (http://andy.durdin.net/demos/gd10/).

after further investigation it appears sypwinder gamedayx crashes srver :P it crashed the teamplay one earlier - which is an entirely seperate box (its in the rotation at the mo).
thats a seperate issue from the server crashes in the first hour - they were caused by source tv - i've no idea why but it seems to be something to do with the auto record and the fact i had voice enabled. rest assured by the time the next gameday comes round we will have tested it out properly and will also run a second, back up server, which we will run on the same IP should the first fail :D
i'm also looking at a propper source tv proxy server in case that sorts it......its a real pity cos i know how much use the demo's are.

checkin my demo now DJ :thumbup1:
Edit: whoa you guys really suck as attacking as a team, never got past the second stage on bloodstained, we've been running that on the colts teamplay server for months now and 60%+ of the time the attackers can get to the final stage and win the game. Even with 3 senteries set up at that final point in round 2...
Shmitz
04-22-2008, 04:09 PM
I think part of the problem with the second stage second point is there's no way to actually see into that area until you're in sentry range. Look at Dustbowl for an example. Every second point is clearly visible from most approaches, but with a lot of ways for defense to still cover incoming attackers and hide sentries away in relatively protected locations. The second point on bloodstained's first stage is like this, but for the second stage attackers are completely blind. It may or may not be harder than the corresponding point on Dustbowl, but it sure is a lot more frustrating.
I suspect the third stage might be similar, but I couldn't say since I've only to it once with a full server.
