View Full Version : 72hr Mapping Contest #3 - Starts June 29th!

It's that wonderful time of the year again when the smell overheating CPU's and the sound of rapid mouse clicks take over. Yes, it is time for The 3rd 72hr Mapping Contest. This contest is not about who can make the prettiest map, it's about who can make the best, most fun map. This contest is loads of fun, but as a mapper you will be pushed to your limits.
THE 3RD 72HR MAPPING CONTEST WILL BEGIN ON JUNE 29th at 12:00pm (noon) EST/17:00 GMT
<Time Zone Converter (http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc)> <Countdown Clock (http://www.timeanddate.com/counters/customcounter.html?msg=72hr+mapping+contest&month=06&day=29&year=2012&hour=12&min=00&sec=00&p0=97)>
RULES
Respect the time limit! You may NOT start making your map in Hammer in ANY way shape or form before it starts. We cannot effectively restrict this, but take this into consideration; This contest is meant to challenge your skills at working effectively and quickly coming up with good solutions. If you cheat, you're only demonstrating your own lousyness to yourself. That doesn't feel good.
You MUST have the map done and submitted before the 72hrs run out. This is very important, because there is no "grace period". Done means done.
Any physical size allowed.
Any gamemode is allowed, you are welcome to use a non-stock gamemode (such as CSF or Tug-of-war), but choose wisely.
You cannot use an already-started map or assets from it. However, you can begin sketching out a layout and planning before the contest begins (this is recommended if you want to make a large map). If you have an old vmf lying around that you want to use, you'll have to remake it from scratch.
Maps must be able to spawn 32 players (16 per team).
Any amount of detail is allowed. However, it's a good idea to concentrate on gameplay and making sure everything works in time for the deadline.
No collaborations are allowed!
Custom content is allowed, but only if it's made entirely by yourself using your own resources OR it's made by someone else who has already made it available to the public. However, please remember that very large file sizes are unnecessary and very annoying to download, so keep your map small by avoiding too much custom content.
You are allowed to use A Boojum Snark's resource library (http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=4674) and other such packs and prefabs, such as the lighting library.
You are allowed to use Fr0z3n's Map Start-up Prefab (http://forums.tf2maps.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=5065)
You are allowed to test your map as many times as you wish during the 72hrs. There will be impromptu's hosted by staff/members throughout the 72hr time period. If you have the time to have your map tested, it is HIGHLY recommended
Your submission MUST follow this naming convention: <gamemode>_<nickname>_72 (You don't have to use your full forum name, but make sure it's recognisable as your map. For instance, I would name mine cp_frozen_72). For multiple entries (or if your map for previous competitions had the same name), append a number at the end of it (i.e. cp_frozen_72_2).
In previous contests we had a lot of maps that did not follow this convention. That won't be tolerated this year. (For realz)
DO NOT USE CAPITAL LETTERS IN YOUR FILE NAME!
You may submit as many entries as you want, but you'll have to judge for yourself whether this is wise.
DISQUALIFICATIONS
Your map will be disqualified from the competition if it breaks the follow rules:
Your map does not follow the set naming convention
Your map crashes the server/clients.
Your map includes assets/sections that are from other maps (this includes anything you've made)
Your map is fullbright/TOO dark (That is, it is impossible to see/decern other team mates and surroundings)*
Your map is a trade map
You have broken any of the preivously mentioned rules
*This will also include maps that are too BRIGHT on LDR AND HDR(it has happened)
JUDGING
After the 72hr mapping period is over, I will check maps for incompatibility issues, make disqualifications, etc. If you suspect that a map has broken a rule (or 2) please contact Fr0z3n ASAP. After that is done (should be about a day and a half), I will open up the voting.
IF, there is MORE than (or equal to) 20 entries, we WILL be doing a preliminary round of voting. You will be asked to list 5 - 10 of your favorite maps (in no particular order). Any votes with less than 5 maps will not be counted. Any votes with more than 10 maps listed, the first 10 maps will be used. After prelim voting is over, the top X* maps will move on to official voting. *Number of maps to move on will be determined based on the number of entries. The cut off will be annouced if/when preliminary voting occurs.
If there is less than 20 entries, then preliminary voting will be skipped, and we will move to official voting. For official voting you will rank the top THREE (3) maps. You also MUST explain why you chose those maps. Just one sentence will do.
The length of each judging period will be determined at the time of judging based on the number of entries.
STREAMING
You are encouraged to stream progress of your work. If you are planning on streaming, you can PM me the url to your stream. On the day of the contest, I will make an annoucement that has all of url's to all the streams. If streaming, please keep it some-what clean. No Porn or adult pictures, videos, sounds. Tarry, you are not allowed to take your shirt off.

No, you do not need to do that, unless you are unable to make the weekend of the 29th, then you can schedule a 72hr period within the week prior to that. Thats when you need to tell me.

The naming convention is so odd... I mean it's fine, doesn't matter, but now when I made e.g. ctf_trotim_72 in this contest then you'd think it's just a ctf version of the trotim_72 of last year when it's an entirely different map

It's just the easiest way to keep people's maps in order. For renaming, just follow the convention listed in the OP. (So you'll be ctf_trotim_72_2, for example.

As long as you do not build the map for it, yes. I'm allowing entity prefabs, so we can get more diversity in the game modes. I'm running the honor system here, no actual maps can be made before the 72hrs. If I find out, you will be DQ'd

We don't have to release the entity setup we prefabbed to the public though right? Like, if I just set it up tomorrow a bit and just sent it to you to confirm there's no shenanigans, and then start the 72h from that prefab, that's totally fine right? Would I even have to do that? I'll be recording most of what I'll be doing anyway but still
Fr0Z3n
06-15-2012, 10:33 PM
I will not ask for you send me your prefab, nor will I ask for you to release it. That said, it wouldn't hurt, and just shows honesty in the contest. But as I noted, I won't ask for it specifically.
If you want to spend it to me, and if you want to release it, that is completely on you.

Then I won't release it until the contest is over I suppose, the surprise is pretty important
Just saying that yes, I will start from a game mode entity setup I already made (unlike last year where I made the SCP setup from scratch which cost a lot of time)

Thats fine, and thats why I'm allowing pre-fab entities. I want the contest to be about mapping, not about getting entities to work. It isn't cool losing an hour or two because you have to rebuild your ents twice.

Okay, with the KoTH competition underway, I need to clarify things.
1) You are allowed to make a KoTH map for the 72hr contest and use it in the KoTH contest, there will be no penalty if you work on it during judging.
2) Since we have 2 contest running, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put the tag 72_ infront of your thread title! The contest entries forum is going to get really busy in the next few weeks and I want to make sure that everything is clear.
Thanks everyone.

Oh, so we put 72_ as the prefix for threads, but _72 as the suffix for map naming? That makes sense.

Really, I just need to see a "72" at the beginning or end of your thread. this'll help me at the end of the mapping period get all the 72hr maps out and clear it up for the KoTH contest entries.

I doubt it. batt style path_tracks are more related to layout than they are to prefab entity logic imo.

Going to rebump this really quick because I've had a couple people come and ask me about it.
Even with all the pyro shenanigans going on, and the likelyhood of an update, THE DATE OF THE CONTEST WILL NOT CHANGE. Unless you have talked to me already (which is 1 of you), the contest is starting at 12:00 Noon, EST. Friday June 29th.
For those of you who wanted to start early, and didn't talk to me before June 22nd, I can not accept your submissions.
If you are not sure when to start, the countdown clock and timezone converter are updated.

I'd personally recommend Own3D with the XSplit Broadcaster program, it's quite neat if you want to have dual-screen setups and stuff, or a split view of a webcam and screen, but it's up to you.

xsplit works with twitch as well, it's not exclusive to any streaming site.
I think the ACC audio is crucial though, if you're planning to stream music you need something better than the Speex implementation xsplit is using atm. Because it can only really do microphone voice right now, music sounds tinny and has no bass at all, music sounds really poor in other words.
Edit: I have recorded comparisons between the two versions of xsplit. Using the same audio track.
This is ACC audio encoder (recorded with beta xsplit back in november), it's still available to paying customers.
http://www.twitch.tv/ravidge/b/300297665
And this is the current xsplit Speex audo encoder. The only option for free users. (the video is low res but its still 1800 kbps, with max audio settings)

192 kbit, 44100 stereo, is far from maxing that thng out. Video capture wise, it's decent as well, the only real "drawback" is that a unapproved channel can only have 50 live viewers.

I have ambitious goals for the 72h contest so I'm looking at every possibilities here. If anything can help me beat the odds I will use it.

Oooohh Is use of Joiner (http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=19083) permitted?
If it is, please everyone remember to use it. It will save you time and with a tiny bit more effort on the final day can make your map look hugely more finished than leaving it in dev textures (Cause y'know, every little helps)
To illustrate how much time it will save you, it took me a total of five minutes (I timed it) to make this scent from scratch:

PLEASE DO NOT USE CAPITAL LETTERS! YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED!

When checking for leaks, just compile with BSP, each time you have to recompile, this'll save you a LOT of time.
Learn Hotkeys, those also save a LOT of time.
Use ABS's Prefab Pack and/or Fr0z3n's Base entity pack, these will REALLY save you time.
Don't worry too much about making the prettiest map. The map could be the prettiest thing in the world, but no one will play it if it isn't fun and plays like shit.
Use your time wisely, this contest is about quick-fire problem solving. If you are stuck on something, come back later, or jsut get something down, and test it!
Test often! I'm sure there will be a lot of map tests going on during the contest!
Don't, panic. You have 72hr's. That is a LOT of time. When you think about how much time you spend on a normal map, it is much much less than this.
The new sd_ gamemode IS ALLOWED for the contest.
You are allowed to update your map during the voting period, but try and not do it too often, as it can sometimes skew results. Koth maps created in this contest, are allowed to be entered into the STAR_ contest.
If you make a thread in the map workshop or contest entries subforums, please put a 72_ in front of the name. I will be moving the non-koth maps out of the contest entries subforum after the contest is over, the 72_ will help me get it done quicker.
I will not be around the for the launch, an announcement will pop up when it is time to go. Best of Luck to everyone entering, this'll be a good year.

So excited!
Are we making a list of streams with people's mapping like last time? I think someone did a big page of embedded streams in the last contest.
Here's my stream page:

htf_trotim_72_2 is go soon
Anyway I might be streaming later tonight, in about ~8 hours, but by then most of the layout is probably pretty far already. I'll try and see if I can record it locally while not streaming and upload it later, who knows. But it won't be anywhere near as fancy as micnax, the hell is going on there
Do we have any list of participants?
No idea if i will be streaming, i might take some progress shots each hour. But generally i'd try to keep everything in secret as long as i can.

Just curious, where would one submit their map? I've looked over the rules and couldn't find anything, unless I'm blind. Would there be a separate thread?
There is going to be an upload thread for this contest, Frozen said he would make it around saturday.

As Aly pointed out in chat, this clock is counting up (It's just what it does when it runs out of time)
So, you can use it as a "Time Elapsed" clock. (http://www.timeanddate.com/counters/fullscreen.html?mode=m&year=2012&month=6&day=29&hour=12&min=0&sec=0&p0=97&msg=72hr%20mapping%20contest)

I live in Northern Virginia, but the storm hit most areas from northern North Carolina to Maryland. I believe Maryland, DC, and Virginia all declared states of emergency.

Agreed. I didn't even think we got around to the first bunch of submitted maps on the 'official' game test day because it went on for so long. Were they actually hosted? Can I get a .dem file if it was?
