yay, i can answer something!
anyways...that error message comes up when you enter the unmapped abyss
so...if it comes up at the start...id assume that you have not created a team spawn and your origin isn't within the map?
so...either make a team spawn or see if there are any errors with your current one

just to clarify...your origin doesn't need to be within the map, its just that thats where you will spawn if there is no info_player_teamspawn entity in the map

info_teamspawn entity.
Grab the entity tool (looks like a lightbuld on the right hand side) then on the left hand side there is a drop down box, it should default to info_teamspawn, then click in the 3d view of your map where you want it (THEN MAKE SURE ITS 16-32 UNITS OFF THE GROUND OTHERWISE THE PROBLEM WILL NOT GO AWAY)
That tool is also how you add models and lights.
I'd first suggest going through this - HERE (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Your_First_Map) - as this site isnt realyl the best place for an introduction to hammer, more of an intro to TF2 mapping for those that kinda already know hammer.
Once you've worked though that you should know everything you need to start mapping, use that site as your bible for mapping info and everything else can be got from this thread - http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=807
also, before posting any errors, copy past your compile log into this - http://www.interlopers.net/index.php?page=errors
If you don't you will get trolls like me pissed off and telling you to do so with out much tact
So once you've searched your little cotton socks off to find the solutions to any woes you have, post here and we'll be glad to help.

you know...ive always put my spawns on the ground and never had that problem...happen to know why?
as a shot in the dark, my spawn rooms tend to have floors that are 32 units thick
