Make a Red or Blu building on 1024x2048 bounds.

Rules:
-1024x2048 limits, that's the size you get to build your building on.
-No 3dskybox, nothing outside the 1024x2048 limit. Height doesn't matter. Go nuts.
-Custom models/props/textures/overlays are allowed
-Need an ingame render (you can use your skybox texture as long as it's a TF2 or a custom one)
-You have to upload the .vmf to prove you didn't exceed the limit.
-People are allowed to download your .vmf and use it in their maps as prefab. That's the risk you have to take! * With credit*
-You don't have to make the back of your building if you can't see it, you only need 1 render of your building anyways so who cares what is nodrawed or not :)
-Submit your ingame render and .vmf before 10 September 2008 in the upload thread!
-Only 2 entries are allowed for each mapper.

Questions? Ask away.

The purpose of the contest is to get eye for detail and tf2 building style.
Good luck to everyone!!! I hope we see even more entries than our prev contest!

I'm entering this one! I'm sure I won't come close to winning, but hopefully I'll learn something. :P

Should I dare? I've never done anything this intricate before.

Oh, but it'll look oh so good in my portfolio.

Can you please make the limits 1024x2048? The 1024x1024 limit is very small considering the scale of TF2 buildings. I tried to make a simple industrial building, and right now it's a cube because of the limits.

It just doesn't work :(

Snipergen
08-09-2008, 02:52 PM
Ok fair enough, that will open up some possibilities maybe.

Changed limits to 1024x2048

Nice timing! I have been working on the layout for my upcoming map and just blocking things out for a few days now. I got bored with that and decided to detail one of my buildings. i thought at first that I went overboard and skipped too far ahead on detail work. Then this beautiful post comes along!

So my entry is here instead. (http://forums.tf2maps.net/blog.php?b=106)

Starting now. I've decided to TF2-up my house. :P

Is there any restriction to player interaction with the building? I.e., can I make a building where the player can get in it and do stuff. Or is it limited to decorative structures?

MrMuffinMan
08-10-2008, 06:31 PM
Wow, the two of you who posted your maps in the upload thread are fricking fast! I've made a wall, and...uh...another wall. :P

Still a month left, though. I'd rather leave this project in the polishing stage until the very last day.

No, just eye candy, as far as I understand.

Youme
08-10-2008, 09:39 PM
from what I gather you're only actually submitting one ingame screenshot, providing the vmf is merely for varification you didn't exceed 1024x2048, which means functionality does not exist, the map is purely aesthetical so you ca nodraw everything you can't see from the cameras view if you wish.

Wait, so judging will be based only on its aesthetic value, not its gameplay?

Indeed, this 'mini-mapping' contest isnt one of gameplay but of detailing ability.

Snipergen
08-11-2008, 03:23 AM
Only eye candy, gameplay would be hard to judge on a scale like this.

To answer the other question, you don't have to be able to get in the buildings, but they have to be life size (if you walk trough it everything should be in proportion)

Laz

08-11-2008, 11:44 AM
Nooo, i'm like so close to getting Avanti out, don't give me a distraction!!

edit:
Is it jugded by a single screen shot or the "environment" as a whole? Not that you need to be able to walk around in it but, a single screen shot may not show you the whole extent of the map..

MrMuffinMan
08-11-2008, 12:03 PM
Am I allowed to use cliffs and such in the mini-map? I know it's all about the building, but say there's something on top of the cliff that's connected to the building...would I be allowed to do that?

Snipergen
08-11-2008, 02:19 PM
Yes , you can use environments to give your building more character. Look at my example, that's how I have it in mind a bit, it's not really 1 standalone building but its good too.
(That's why I kinda rushed that example so you would think further than just build 1)

Just to verify:
The deadline is midnight (12PM) GMT on September 9th?

I think that would make it 4PM PST (7PM EST) on September 9th for those of us on the other side of the pond?

Thanks!

This should be another challenging competition!

I just hope to hit closer to the mark this time around. ;)

I make the contest, so it's my midnight! That's GMT+1 yep :)
And good luck elfworks, looking forward to it!

I'm gonna try a blu building next too, and do an effort :D

Sorry to be a little bitch, but is there any chance we can get the size restriction to be more flexible? By which I mean, as long as the area adds up to 1024 x 2048 it's a valid entry. Y'know? Because such a thin rectangle is not optimal for every entry :D

Snipergen
08-12-2008, 03:11 PM
No, sorry man.

Where are we supposed to upload our entries? In the map area? In the models area?

Maybe we can get a download area for contest submissions? :D

Its two of those orange grid lines, the orange ones are every 1024 units and visleaves are automatically cut there.
When you make a brush it tells you its dimentions in the 2D view just like when you make a selection. the cursor's position in the 2D views is also reported at the bottom of the screen

10 September. 8:00 GMT+1, I will follow the experiment live. There is indeed a small chance a stable black hole could form as I read. On the other hand, can't stop it, they are going to test it and there's nothing to do about it. I downloaded the safety documents on the CERN website and read through some of them. It's all theory's, nobody knows what's going to happen.

There was reason to believe the first atomic bomb would cause a chainreaction so big it would destry the entire world... it didn't happen

But it belongs in OT ;)

I'm starting up my entry tonight or tomorrow, I've been planning it out over the last few days.

I figure I might as well give this a shot. As I said in my intro post, my problem is seeing something through to conclusion before some other shiny idea draws me away. This should be concise enough to mean I end up with a finished result...
