My images might be borked because I have terrible internet (smallband) for 5 more days, but I managed to get my images uploaded (I think).
Anyway done this in 4 hours. 1024x2048. I used every unit :p
Than I got bored because I realised I have to C++ again :( I feel that I rushed this a bit.

Which is precisely the point of the contest. I learnt quite a bit of practical knowledge about detailing just from doing this contest.
And remember, you've still got a whole month! Since Snipergen and I got our entries in so soon, you can look at them, see the mistakes we made (see how many you can find!), and do better. It gives you an advantage.

Indeed, you can defiantly beat these things... they were only done in 4 hours or so :P Once you spend a whole month detailing one thing, it should get quite detailed...

I figured we needed more blu in this thread (okay, okay, so its got gray, not blu. But everyone knows industrial = blu).

Losing marks to some lighting issues under the truck and behind the ladder but otherwise its pretty cool, you seem to have got the teamless theme from hydro spot on (sorry, I don't believe you can call it blu themed with out more...well, blue)
Here is my Submission, Blu Lab. I have a feeling it wont win or come close to winning, but I thought I'd try it out anyway.
This is a Clean modern industrial/office building, Indoor/outdoor accessible, complete with 3 story elevator.
Building is about half or less than the maximum size, and I thought this contest was about just the building so I neglected to make an outside environment, but hopefully this will make it easier for others to plug it into their maps.
Feel free to use this in whole or in part with or without credit given, enjoy.

It's very nice, though i wasn't aware you were allowed 3d skyboxes. I think the competition was about what you could do with that much space only.

Correct, no skybox.

You will have to get rid of the skybox and you'll need to upload your .vmf on TF2maps.net

Well, this is just awesome...Yesterday, my laptop's screen cracked, so I'll have to take it to repair. According to mr. repair guy, it won't be ready until a week after I give it to them at the very least, and since that computer is where I have my vmf, I'll most likely cancel my entry.
UNLESS I manage to transfer the vmf over to this computer (which will be hard, considering about 1/5 of the screen is still functioning). I'll let you know what happens, but either way I'm pretty sure I won't be able to work any more on it or give you any screenshots (I could try transferring the bsp too so that someone else can take screens if you want to, since I don't have TF2 on this computer), which sucks.

Condolences!
Can you run off an external monitor plugged into the VGA port?
There's usually a function key to toggle between LCD and VGA output. It'll probably look like a little monitor in a monitor. ( My Dell laptop key is labeled CRT/LCD, and you have to use the blue Fn key to access it. )
It might give you a chance to move the files, at least...
Good luck!
MrMuffinMan
09-04-2008, 05:28 PM
I'm not sure if I could do that, I'm not exactly handy with such things. :P
Of course, I will try.
Unless I can figure out how to use an external monitor, though, I think what I'll do is just buy a crapload of CDs and burn all my stuff on them.
Sorry if I'm a bit off topic.

Hello all, I'm new to this forum (and to mapping as well). This is the first time I release something I made, and I'm looking forward to listen to your suggestions. Probably there are a lots of mistakes, but I enjoyed a lot making this and I learned a lot too. I focused in adding interesting details more than on the structure of the complex.

It was a cool idea, I had thought about it for awhile. Just never thought of a location and was lacking inspiration until the last minute and just felt like doing it.
I kindof wish it had been either a red or blu contest, the next could've been the other. I'm interested to see what gets thought up next.
Maybe it could be something like 'build the coolest cap point' or something. More fodder to jumble together into a map. I thought the size restriction was great. Not too big or small. Something similar for another contest would be cool.
Maybe coolest alpine setting since that's really fresh right now.

OK here's my entry. The initial idea was a kind of border checkpoint, but it turned into more of a compound. This was the first time I'd ever done anything in Hammer, so you can kind of see me learning as I go along, starting with the simple wooden garage, and ending up with the main 2-story building. I could spend a lot more time tweaking things, but I guess its now time to call it finished and try something new.
Cheers for the competition, it has certainly helped focus and give me a target (with a deadline) to aim for. Any comments/feedback gratefully received :)

Pretty cool Banni.
You could probably do a few things to add some detail but my suggestions are minimal. Probably the most noteable things that come to mind would be making the perimeter wall concrete just to break up the blue brick tex some.
Maybe some roof vents, would just add a little and give players somewhere to hide.
Open the wood garage for players to hide in.
Maybe a tall lookout tower to give the whole scene more vertical volume.
I think it's pretty good as is though. I felt the same way as you, I could've spent hours more adding little details and whatnot but it got to the point where I had to say enough's enough :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually did have a lookout tower, but took it out as I just couldn't get it too look right. I agree it could benefit from a little more vertical scale. I've definitely learned a lot, and got ideas for things to try in my next piece of work.
By the way, how does voting work for these contests? Is there a panel I can bribe? ::p:

Here we go! Tried to do something different. Looked for suggestions from my clan, told them I would make the first building anyone said. Well, that was interesting, the first guy said the "strip club from Porky's". So....I used it as inspiration for something aside from the usual industrial/mining/farming/lumber themes.. It's intentionally dark, I mean, who goes to a gentlemen's club when the sun is out!?

By the way, this sign was my first custom texture. I can improve on it A LOT.

Thanks to J_Theory for the car model. Parking lot couldn't have happened without it!

God damn shadow issues at the very last chance. RARGH, I'm mad now!
I've tried fixing them for a while, but I guess nothing works, so I'll just give up on that and get my entry out there already. There's no way I'll get any votes with that kind of hideous mistakes, though. :<

Alright, sorry guys, but I guess I'm out of this contest for a variety of reasons.
1. A broken laptop has confronted me with tons of issues
2. Some stupid shadows that appear out of nowhere and make my entire map look ugly
3. I'm not happy with my map at all
Now please don't get all "awww but I wanted to see your entry! Boo!". Because I honestly would never put out such an incomplete and seriously handicapped map for a contest. Good luck to the rest of you.
EDIT: I'll post some screens in my blog, though, when a better chance shows up.

This is my first stab at using Hammer to build a map, and my first time modeling for the TF2 universe, so it didn't turn out quite the way I'd originally envisioned it. :)
Once I started putting my map together, I realized I had put way too much into one little rectangle!
So, instead of starting over, I decided to make my level in the spirit of the 'Super Deformed' anime style. In that style, normal anime characters are redrawn much smaller with extremely exaggerated features.
Since this was an experiment in learning, I tried to put as many different elements into it as I could. You'll see elements from regular levels, and I also included my own custom textured object (the oil cracking tower), along with several custom overlays.
It should be navigable by all classes, and there's plenty of places to jump or duck behind. There are some supplies stashed around and a resupply locker. I have a working door, and I think I even got the water feature working. Everything's there - just too close together. Thus, I call it my 'Super Deformed Oil Refinery.'
Shadow maps are calculated at ridiculously high values, but since we're doing this for looks, and not speed....
There's one weird error message, but I have no idea how to find the problem:
Bad data found in model "../parts/dmx/medic_morphs_low.dmx" (bad bone weights)
I had fun.
I hope you all enjoy it, too!

Awesome. The only thing I don't like is the stairs in pic 4 and 5. Add some brushes to the sides and it will look just fine.

I like the look too. Its just that round building, wouldn't you expect it to be filled with oil? looks like an oil supply to me :-p

(it's really a secret base disguised as an oil refinery)
I like it, looks like you might've put in more detail than anyone else (and custom stuff too) good work.

It's but a pale shadow of the oil rig in your sig. (Just saw the word Oilrig and had to check it out. :) )
The steps are pretty basic, but they weren't supposed to be in the final map. I built a custom oil tank model with more detailed steps and a railing in another 3D package. I can export SMD files, and compile the objects just fine, but I just can't seem to get my collision models working.
Time ran out, so that's what I was stuck with. :)

Just keeping in the 'hidden base' motif. A few more hours, and the retractable roof would have been fully operational! (Cue Evil Laughter.)
Still haven't built the hydraulics for the Death Ray yet... :)

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!
(I have a feeling that beetle was just kidding around.)

It had a really cool skybox, too - until I realized all the refinery props were from Half-Life. :()
I'm trying to recapture the feel with TF2 props, but have a way to go...

Agh, not my best work, but I really liked the contest and all the great entries and wanted to help out. Congrats to everyone who entered! All very fine entries.
Anyway, trying to work on some unconventional architecture, and work some secret stuff into my work, the one garage holds another set of missiles. Hope you enjoy, great to see y'all's work.

I am very proud to see such a great turnout for this contest! Best mini-contest we have had!
Whens the next major-mapping contest coming?

Honestly I think we get more results in the smaller, more accessible contests. This one is a very good example of this. Not everyone can model, skin, or make custom content in general, but small shows of prowess are fun for everyone and a good learning process.
