Well, what do you do if your computer freezes half, if you click away hammer to surf a bit you never gonna know if your hammer crashed or if its still compiling :p
Most of the time I watch some tv or draw a bit :)

I set Windows Media Player to always on top and start watching a tv show before I start compiling. This way you don't have to click away from compile window so you can still see progress as it compiles and watch tv .

Mostly draw, paint and look for a real job.

I use Batch Compiler to run the compile tools which frees up more resources by not having Hammer running, plus I can always see the window update in real time. If I need to do something else I just use the taskmanager to lower the priority on the compile process until my other thing loads, then turn the compile back up.

Er, my compile window doesn't freeze up when I click away?
I usually chat or read webcomics or go use the bathroom or something.
I usually listen to music by going to youtube while designing and get up and walk around, stretch the legs when compiling.

On the current map I'm working on. A full compile takes about three and a half hours to complete.
VBSP: 21 seconds
VVIS: 3 hours, 24 minutes, 26 seconds
VRAD: 7 minutes, 23 seconds
Doing a fast compile take less than a half hour.

5-10 minutes. Maybe 15 if I'm doing a final compile.

(I am currently compiling)
I usually surf the web, hammer rarely crashes for me during compile.

wow, that is long. I thought a fast compile would always stay under a few minutes.
Edit: a full compile of photofinish takes about 10 minutes (including hdr)

Because it is inevitable that whenever someone asks "what do you do while you wait for....." someone must say masturbate sooner or later.
And hey, maybe he does. :P
I browse stuff. And chat.

This is why you use VBCT, kiddies.

95%+ of compiles i run are over in 2 minutes so its a good time to continue a steam conversaion or forum browsing or map uploading or whatever really

Exactly, a compile of a late beta map takes me about 10 minutes on a 1/1 and a half year old computer. I take the oppotunity to go to the toilet, get myself a drink, check my emails. Dual core has allowed me to compile and do other stuff at the same time, like watch an episode of family guy off mega video. By the time i'm finished, the bsp is waiting for me, not the other way around.

How can you fully compile a beta map within 10 minutes? :O
My last beta map, rockpike, took me more than 2 hours for full compile, and demolition is more than 10 minutes, though it hasnt any details.
Guess its time for a new pc D:
When compiling, i usually browse the web, listen to music or watch videos.
It takes me a total of 18 minutes to compile a FULL (fancy shadows and all) compile of furnace creek.
On my old pc which was around 1.5 years old it took around 28-32 minutes (cant remember exactly)
since i almost always have the cordon tool turned on and often do compiles with nothing but bsp I'm never really waiting for a compile.
Takes about 10 minutes to compile Lighthouse on Full and about 20-ish minutes for Nightfall with all the fancy stuff as well. Clearly some people don't optimise. :P

Takes me about 5-10 minutes, depending on if I've managed to convince VVIS to be nice to me.
I usually either browse forums or continue conversations on Steam during compiles though for some reason Youtube videos lag insanely while compiling, at least for me.

I dont think that its the optimization, when vis takes a few minutes, but rad takes hours. So much about that ;)
If i had nothing to do, i could decompile some of your maps and compare the time, but im too lazy :P

I wait for 30 seconds and viola! compile complete!
Maybe a minute.... But still, not very long.
