View Full Version : Soldier shots

Ok mind my ignorant but this is a serious question.

Im seeing more and more youtube videos and other stuff pop up showing these people using soldier and making the most incredible shots.. IE aiming.

Using one rocket to pop someone up, then before they even see the rocket pop them up, automatically going to "where they would be".

Is this just the skill of some people? honestly i can help but think its a cheat =(

I'd say skill... if the second is fired before the target is knocked upwards I don't see how any cheat could predict movement that isn't occurring yet.

Unless it runs the where-that-person-will-be physics trajectory...

stuff like this is absolutely absurd. Ones where you even double shots in the air?

im not saying anyone is cheating in anyway, but stuff like this and other videos make my jaw drop.

I don't really find that kind of thing difficult to be honest, but I do play a lot of soldier (or used to anyway). I've gotten considerably better at rocketjumping of late, to the point I'm the only one in my circle of server regulars who can beat the Rocketeer map.

Rockets take a good bit of skill to predict, but they're a hell of a lot easier than demo primary grenades. I fancy myself a damned good shot with those things, and I wish people would try to learn them instead of spamming nades and switching to stickies the other 90% of the time.

The rockets i can do myself 2, but the demoman, well, it seems a little cheaty to me, i think the nades dont fly that far

I've been playing soldier a lot recently myself, somewhat of a responce to the pyro upgrade (thinking reflecting rockets makes solly's redundant! Balls! I'll show em..).
I've been pretty good at getting combo's and and becoming rermarkably good with strafing shots.. that hit people running sideways from me. Even from a distance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuaJ8r_aE-U&feature=related That guys a bit much tho!

One of the things i find is to not dodge their rockets and they shoot wide.. every time xD it really pisses them off because they obviously expect the kill :p

Bah, Frozenshift. I usually leave the game if he appears, because nothing annoys me more than being consistently killed by a soldier, hopelessly flung into the air, awaiting death...

This is by no means cheating. That map hes on and another one I play a lot of. I play soldier/demoman as my only two classes, as does he, and its really easy to predict where they are going to fly.

It is not so easy when your at different angles, or when your actually in game. Notice you never see him shoot them off sideways and try and hit them. It is very freaking hard because you cant judge their peak very well. What hes doing it shooting at their feet as they reach their peak. When your in game, all these other factors come into play such as if the players jumping when your rocket explodes (if not they dont go nearly as high) or if they are strafing they fly sideways, etc.

So basically shooting bots where all they do is jump in place is a hell of a lot easier than popping someone up in game and hitting them in the air consistently. I consider myself decent at it, but ive played ctf_bball2 vs some of the top soldiers in TF2 and those guys are disgusting. No matter which way I rocket jump, they will nail me.

*On Another Note*

I would love to see someone attempt to create an aimbot for rockets/pipes. They are in for a lot of headaches and eventually defeat.

You know he has a map that helps you 'train' this skill ?

It's one of the higher skill curves to the solider, it's players like that which disprove people saying solider is an easy class and "any noob can play soldier and fire crit rockets all day " *rolls eyes*

UT players would find soldier class easy to master

I agree and i AM one of those people who say "noobs play soldiers" Sorry.. i am, 1 out of 50 doesn't justify it as a high skill class. What i mean by this is although there IS a higher skill bracket with this classes, its so "noob friendly" that most players playing soldier are fine with that and don't stride to be better.

To those who do.. i hate you =p

nah its not cheating. ive dont this a few times, but its weird. i know you cant actually tell where a target will be at all times, but when you pop someone up with the initial rocket, you can kind tell where hes gonna fly to.

Not a cheat, believe me.
Tbh I do this stuff ingame too.
I'm only impressed by the vid of the guys that play the original TF with the rocket launchers, that's some mad skill.

I downloaded the map and tried it out, not that hard, actually. Perhaps the double rocket requires the practice... It sure seems that way.

Its skill. I can hit rocketjumping soldiers with the demoman primary about 50% of the time.

For example, if a soldier rocketjumps mostly vertically, if you aim directly at them, and fire at the apex of their jump, the grenade will hit. That's simple physics right there.

I actually agree with you DJive, most newbies can play it well .. IF they are already good and experienced with other games such as CS and UT. If they aren't then it can be quite tricky to get used to at first especially if you have bad aim and you're not used to predicting enemy movements.
This is the one key thing I like about TF2 though, most classes you can play as a newbie and still feel like you're doing well and contributing, yet all of them have higher skill curves and things to master as it were. I'll admit I've seen a lot of new soldiers get themselves high on the score board without ever knowing how to rocket jump or control their ammo. It's the same fight with pyro's, they CAN be a push w+fire class, but find a good pyro who knows what he/she is doing and it doesn't seem so nooby after all !

Agreed, allthough I found soldier shit-hard when I began playing.

Yeah, when I have friends that just starting out in TF2, and they're worried about a learning curve and being wasted by experienced players, I tell them to try out the Soldier first. Nobody ever says, "Try the Spy first". The Soldier is just nice and straightforward. However, it's cool that there's an upper level of skill for the guy.

Even my favorite class the Pyro is pretty simple and straightforward. He's more complex than a "go forth and kill" character, but when it comes down to it, ambush techniques aren't hard to learn when you are familiar with the map.

There are certain classes that come off as simple and "n00b-friendly", but I think that's a good thing.

As an experienced scripter, I can tell you the only useful function for soldiers that scripts provide is a one-click rocket jump (crouch+jump+fire with one click). There are some pretty sophisticated scripts for other classes (spy in particular) but not many can aid with the soldier.

Agreed. Scripts aren't magic.

Personally I have done a few of these, and noticed that it requires alot of skill. People that do it nonstop like (Reptile) have been around since the beginning and know where u will be at when they pop u up. Just takes alot of practice. I've been using Demoman alot and have had a few mid air shots with the pipe bomb, but hard to do.
