Ikem, a quick FYI regarding your sky. From the looks of the corn, Architecture, and general landscape, it looks like the map is in the Midwest.

Tint the sky green just slightly. Here in the midwest, a Green sky means Hail, Tornadoes, and all that other bad stuff. I'd say just edit the light_environment so you can just barely detect the green, but meh, would look fine as it is. Just tint the sky texture.

Thunder = Good
Rain = a little light, but don't want to draw attention to it, so it's Good
Owls, Wind and Wildlife = Good
Atmosphere = Dark = Good
Lighting in buildings = Iffy... could be better, just the colors of the lights...
Textures = Good for whats right, some need fixed though
Player Clips = Almost there, just a few to add
Water = Bug in gutter, but you know that :)
Health = Hard to get to cause of that bucket, make it respawn a little slower... maybe by 10 seconds
Gates = Good, but we've discussed this, they'll be better soon.
Skybox = Plain, but decent, it's foggy, a tornado would be sweet. =P

We are playing it right now at the gameday, 6vs6/7vs7. I love the lighting, looks great!

The map feels very big for an arena. People can't find each other and theres not really any fights going on. That makes it quite boring. Maybe you can take some areas away, like that bridge and the house behind the silos.

Another thing, it's hard to catch the health pack. as any class other than scout you can't really reach it.

Pretty fun map, just a little too large for arena as HeaH said, along with everyone else in gameday ;D. Few Graphical and gameplay suggestions:

Intersecting Brushes:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3394/3415779730_233e2e4454_o.jpg

This looks odd:

Incorrect nodraw:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3303/3415780162_27c15feab6_o.jpg

Could use a playerclip so players can smoothly walk up from the stacks of wood to the ladder without jumping:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3354/3414973417_e39beb87a0_o.jpg

This roof should be playerclipped, otherwise you can fall through an stand on the light, plus it's kind of annoying.

Hope that helps you out, I liked the map, it was pretty fun and balanced, just too big.

I got the healthpack in several classes, but it is a leap.

Great map, had alot of fun.

But like everyone said it's big. I never saw anyone on the bride and never went that far myself.

I think the best way to shrink the map and not effect gameplay would be to move the fences by the corn up to the houses, maybe even pull that fence up further so you can't get behind every house, or even beside some.
Then use that road fade tex between the fences and the corn, so you don't have to do much.
Block a few of the house insides off. There are just so many paths and areas.

Great map though, I'd play as is happily but I think alot of arena servers wouldn't like the size. Arena's tough as it ius to get server time.

A larger arena map, probably on the scale of badlands. Still is fun, just plenty of places to hide. The health packs on the stumps are a little hard to jump on, they need to be lower or the ground higher, or something to jump on first.

There are also a few graphical issues I noticed:

Other than that, seemed good. Keep up the work! :-)

You may not rip a finished central area from a map you've made previously.

I don't know if this bides that rule or not. He'd better talk to Youme(<---Got it right this time!) first.

Ikem

A nice looking map and I think some of the detail is pretty darn nifty.....

For example, I like the '20% built' buildings....nice touch eg......

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/Noshdaminsk/hl22009-04-1117-24-31-85.jpg

and.........

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/Noshdaminsk/hl22009-04-1117-26-10-39.jpg

Also, the water in gutter is a nice touch....

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/Noshdaminsk/hl22009-04-1117-24-08-32.jpg

Had a few points / opinions / questions about the following two piccys....

Overlapping displacements - do you intend to keep them like that? I know it isn't at the beta stage yet, but having seen some of you other displacement work, this doesn't look that tidy........
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/Noshdaminsk/hl22009-04-1117-26-55-64.jpg

You could make the scale a little smaller outside the door here...
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w15/Noshdaminsk/hl22009-04-1117-25-10-04.jpg

In closing, I like the effect of the storm that is coming - you have nailed the fog level, so don't touch that IMHO....

I am not a great lover of Arena maps, but I had fun playing this one.......

Good stuff!
Nosh.

So, we are playtesting the map now

I still think the map is too big. Try cutting one of the houses at the right or left side of the map.

Icarus
04-18-2009, 02:50 PM
you need to reorient the spawns so that they are facing forwards.

Additionally, please consider adding more ammo packs. As it is right now it's very unfriendly toward engineers. The large ammo pack is so far away from any action that it's only used by spies.

Regardless, this is a fantastic and beautiful map.

watched the stv demo and thanks for the feedback

i have boarded off the house that u dont spawn in and extended it to the fence. clipped the areas that icarus shouted out and i think i am going to leave the spawns as is for a while, i have added signs that point to the mid cp so that might help b2 should be tested next saturday

if there is anything else please note it here

also i am removing the water from the gutters... cuz they are bugging out and i guess there is no fix to it.

hey ikem. I took a few screenies of some things that I wanted to bring to your attention...

I was getting stuck on these two trees when running around the corner, especially the tree in the 1st picture (got me killed twice!)

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a358/TreeSki/Team%20Fortress%202%20arena_storm/arena_storm_b1c0002.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a358/TreeSki/Team%20Fortress%202%20arena_storm/arena_storm_b1c0001.jpg

Not a huge issue here, but I think the bricks on the ramp look funny being cut like that. Maybe you can texture the side of the ramp with something. Or not... :D

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a358/TreeSki/Team%20Fortress%202%20arena_storm/arena_storm_b1c0003.jpg

I also heard people talking about getting stuck on props and mentioned that you should recheck your clipping stuff.
Anyways... I'm not a huge arena fan but this is a great map, more fun than the official ones that I've played!

Edit: Another thing. There are 2 places in the map where you have a lantern sitting on the ground. I like the idea of it, but it looks a little silly with the handles sticking up. Maybe they should just go on the wall?

That well lit garage in front of the small health has no exit. Is there any reason why not?

Bump, I know, but I get that whenever loading up your map.

I have to wonder if that's a problem on your side, because I haven't had a trouble loading it, and we played tested it fine last month.
