View Full Version : ***Mapping Contest #8 Capture point***
"Stand on the freakin' point, you moron!"
Linear central capture point contest
http://forums.tf2maps.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=869&stc=1&d=1237829588
Create the best central capture point you can, detailing is everything and function is nothing. Want to see what you can all do.
Rules:
No size limits but recommended of 2024-ish for total area, no 3D skybox allowed
Must submit a minimum of one screenshot and a .bsp, a .vmf is optional.
No custom content allowed, that means no models, no textures, no skyboxes, etc, etc.
The arena must be symmetrical with one team's theme on one side and the other's theme on the opposite side.
Maximum of one entry.
You may not rip a finished central area from a map you've made previously.
Nothing has to be functional at all, this is purely detailing practice.
Your submission MUST follow this naming convention: cap_point_<forum name>.bsp (If you're forum name is stupidly long, compromise on your name, not the prefix. eg. cap_point_vfig.bsp for Velvet Fist Iron Glove's entry)
Everything must be finished and submitted in a PM to me before Monday 20th April
In your PM submission:
A link to your .bsp, and .vmf if you wish, in one compressed archive. Please use an upload site other than tf2maps.net (preferably something like filebeam that doesn't have a queue to download).
You should provide only one screenshot of your map, taken at the best gfx quality your pc can handle, no HUD elements or player models either.
Please do not post screenshots or your download link in this thread - I will remove them if you do, I know it's tempting but this is our trial to eliminate screenshot based voting. Once the deadline is passed I'll put all entries into one download and host that for everyone to download.
Any questions? Ask away!
Good luck to everyone :thumbup1:

Want to re-itterate the submission process for this one, its not the same as usual.
Please read that top post very carefully.

This is a great idea because of the versatility of the finished product...you can make an Arena map and/or a 5cp out of it (which is prolly what I'll do)
I'm assuming same deal here...other map makers can use the finished entries as prefabs?

If you're gonna tell people to remove their hud and weapon models, do you wanna include the console commands in your post too? I know it's simple stuff, basic screenshot ettiquette but it's probably gonna save several people the googling inconvinience.

Looks fun though.

Ah actually, I'm not sure about the .VMFs anymore, because of the vesatility of this particular contest I think I might withdraw the .VMF requirement to allow people to turn them into full maps without fear of someone else doing that too.
What do people think?

Yea I would just let the bsp's do the talking just in case... that way there is no inconvenience.
We can use whatever theme we want to?

Kinda assume people already know these. But just incase, here's how to get the best from your screenshot http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=4223

Yes, no custom content though, so you're limited to whatever valve have already released. You also need both team's theme, one for each side.

using wood vs metal supports.. using the egypt theme should really test your skills since there IS no team theme for it (why cp_seth doesn't work well, you can't tell whos side you're on since its all yellow!!!)

Yea, I'd prefer the author of each entry has discretion over what's done with it. Something small like a building or room wouldn't be a big deal, but a mid-point could represent some serious time invested

And this is a looks contest, not a 'how good does it play' contest, yes?
p.s. I see no reason for vmf files to be submitted
Yay!!! finally a contest i want to enter :D
?
yes, my reasoning is to as best as possible eliminate the screenshot based voting we have had from other contests.

I think that it would only be fair for the authors if they are not required to include the .vmf. If someone wants to use the point for something, they can pm the author and ask for the vmf.

So, can you use the team coloured concrete walls, or does it have to be wood for red and metal/stone for blue?
Either way, I'm gonna have another go (maybe use underscores this time :))
So, can you use the team coloured concrete walls, or does it have to be wood for red and metal/stone for blue?Any texture thats packed into the TF2 and shared source GCFs is available for you to use. And as far as theme goes if you think it counts as blue's theme its blues theme
Ah nice - another detailing contest. I missed the last one because I didn't have much time left, but thank you for this one! :)

just to be clear....In the original post it says arena, but I'm assuming that was a typo and you meant to say area, correct? so this could be possibly used for a 5-cp map.
No I meant 'arena', but that doesn't mean 'arena_'
The central capture points of 5 point maps are in an arena, and thats what you're to make for this.
But the idea behind it is 5 point map not an arena_ map.

This is sounding pretty cool.
As limiting as 'making each side team based' sounds it really leaves it wide open.
Maps that are strange that fit the bill could be anything: 2 fort, mach, the one with the two big trucks... You can always tell which side you are on.
I think only including one screen and a bsp is a good idea. Hopefully it will encourage more people to go in game and look (only took me half hour max to run through all the intels).
Also a good idea to leave the useage up to the mapper IMO. Just in case someone is serious about finishing it up. I'm even considering using my intel room after I made it :)
Looks like next contest will have to be cap point #2 ;)
Ok as of now, .VMF inclusion is 100% optional.

considering this is amiddle point AND is requiring distinct red/blu sides, i don't see that there actually is any different between making an arena or a 5-point cp centre point. they'd both require pretty much the same design point.

*sigh* Another detailing contest? I understand some people enjoy detailing, but I was hoping for a contest based on gameplay. In my humble opinion, gameplay is much more important than aesthetics.
Oh well, if I come up with something I'll give it a shot.

You're not wrong; I think most people here agree with you. Unfortunately, designing good gameplay is not a problem that's easily reduced to a size suitable for these mini-contests. That's why the site holds larger contests for full-size maps from time to time.

What's with these "functionality isn't important" guidelines? The point (hahahahha) of making a control point area is to create one that presents some interesting gameplay. Just making it pretty is like detailing any old area.

Just making it pretty is like detailing any old area. The point is its detailing practice, the area chosen keeps people working with the same ideas in their head. After all a contest thats "Detail whatever you want as best you can" would be no fun.
Gameplay comes in the larger contests, if gameplay is what you're after you're free to work on your own map and there will be another larger contest in a while*.

help!
i tried to design just a centre point but in the end couldn't stop myself sketching out the entire map layout XD
Thats ok! keep the rest of the map, just cut out everything beyond the centre point and save it for after the contest! (since .vmf submission is now non-compulsory you don't have to worry about someone else using it)

It would still be nice to have a working mid capture point so that the player can be immersed in the setting more. Screenshots wont show a hud anymore but it'll look more appropriate seeing the mid point as it should be (animated etc).
I was intending to enter this but i just got a glimpse of my next uni project :/ We'll see what happens..

Damn I'm trying to get some good idea but all i can think about is how the 3D skybox should look like :/
Then you're a bit out of luck. No 3D Skybox allowed. First or second rule.
Also, I hath discovered how to create my "Woods" theme without using any custom content. Since framerate doesn't matter, I can use as many tree models of any type as I want. I am going to enjoy this. :D
So that should solve your problem right there :PI think that specific part relates to custom skybox textures rather than 3D skyboxes ;)

well, its not 100%, but i am including the splash txt file in the file so yall know what else I had planned. Even as it is, i consider it my best work. Combined a lot of small concepts I have used over the years, things i learned from the last contest and then turned the volume notch up and took a trip to egypt (or is that saying too much).
oh well, i got inspired by someone comment about how egypt doesnt have any team coloring and ran with that to prove the textures dont have to be the source of the team coloring. too bad i ran out of time to get the final effect. :)
will get it submitted with the vmf once it finishes compiling.

Yes, yes... my map frightens you yet you have not seen it nor have I have even worked on it. Yep, I have that effect on people with my maps.

o0o0o0o0o I didn't know you were using props, and only 1 screenshot is going to be taken so that way it isn't finally judged on just screenshots. It's more about going in game and looking around at everything to see the absolute detail incorporated. :\

I don't know if other people would like this, but I have a request. When the competition is over and the maps are being made for download, can you number the folders that they will come in, so that the maps are in order as they will appear in the voting pole? That way, it's easy to view each map one by one, and in the order that they appear on the pole.
Either that, or order the pole alphabetically.

For anyone who thinks opening ALL the entries is too much hard work (You lazy bums):
You have a week to do it, say there are 20 entries, at 5 minutes per entry it works at 100 minutes total, and that spread over the 7 days allowed for voting thats about 15 minutes per day. Nice and manageable.

Hell, I spend 9 hours evaluating and writing down responses the last contests 28 entries. well worth the time spent. If i can sit my lazy butt in front of the computer to do that, than anyone can spend 3 or 4 hours looking through them. You probably sit that long working on maps and watching tv.
Besides, if you actually look through a map for 10 min and just pick things out that are good and bad, you end up learning more in a couple hours than you can learn in hammer making your own maps. Ask yourself: how was that constructed? why is that there? what causes that to happen? is there a better way to do that?

What should I do about the sealing off of the section? I currently plan on just having dev textures where the entry to the other parts of the map would go, but I don't want people to think I didn't finish. If I use a texture that works, it's weird, because it's right next to a complicated displacement, so I would have a flat rock texture right next to the displacement. Should I just leave it empty, and have it opening to the skybox?
@void - yes
@cotc you can do what you like to seal it, I'd suggest cordon if you dont want to seal it properly

Things left to do:

Just wondering if, after the contest is over, I would be able to turn my entry into a CTF map?
Yeah, why not. The rules are you don't have to put your vmf out for others to use.
I'm gonna turn mine into a 5 point anyway 'cause I haven't made one yet, but ctf's need a good balanced mid too.
I actually think I'll probably do an arena version too since it'll basically be done by then.
Yeah I was considering Arena, too.
But, to me, Arena is just a quick way to throw a new theme out there.
In the contest, you can't have custom content, therefore, not really a "new" theme.
Oh, and, the fate of my entry lies in my signature.

Looks like today is officially 2 weeks from contest end, still plenty of time to whip something up.
Was kindof curious how much competition there is already.
I counted back through the thread and think we are probably looking at a solid 10 mappers working on something.
There were a few others that sounded like they might be doing something. Usually there's at least one lurker or last minute contender.
I hope we do see upwards of 15 entries. I know the no screens might be keeping the thread slow but I'd like to see a raise of hands.
Are you working on a mid-point?
My hand is up. waits impatiently holding elbow with other hand...
(I'm hoping to have an alpha 5 point cap in 3 weeks - with a beta-final mid point)

Youme, you are horrible.
I've got a plan, but that didn't exactly amount to much in the previous contest, which will probably be the same result here. But hey, I might even surprise myself.

In it 2 win it
...or at least place in the meaty part of the bell curve...
Actually, I've been struggling with some bonehead shit, but this is a great opportunity to get those struggles out of the way =)

No, I'm not going there too...
Great, what I forsee now. some of us spend days/weeks working on a mid-point. VFIG decides to do a last minute entry and cleans up the competition >(
LOL
If anyone does that, I'll find the .vmf somewhere, or decompile the .bsp, and personally carve it with a high-number-sided shape.
For great justice.

Lol, that is ultimate justice! If that does happen you must post screenshots of each grueling moment!

I don't think Youme can take jokes.
He gets mad at you for making jokes, yet he makes reeeeally bad sexual innuendo jokes.

I didn't get a chance to finish my intel room entry (damn you displacements! *shakes fist*), but I'm slowly doing a cap point. However I am working in NoobMapper Time which might be even slower than Valve Time.

But its only fair to abuse the program that abuses us so much...All those hours it forces us to spend in front of it and keeping it appeased with use, but still snapping to non-existant grid lines on pastes, moving textures around even though you have texture lock on, crashing during vbsp startup for no reason...and so on. It earned a little whips and chains type abuse (you know you want to pull that one out for your next post Youme)
However I am working in NoobMapper Time which might be even slower than Valve Time.
Impossible
Seven days left. Get cracking on your entries and get them PM'ed to me already!

Still got time to start and finish.
I have 3 days of possible work and I'm gonna use em (my sessions don't seem to go very far lately).
You'll get a PM from me late Sun.

What a good time I had with my entry. So many noob mistakes I got the opportunity to fix the hard way! Possibly missed a few, but w/e, I'm going with it
Good luck to everyone who's participating! I'm excited to see all the entries

Yea, I'm trying to finish up all the little detailing now, I only have half the map done, but that's all that needs to be done =P quick copy and rotate 180 and all that's left is a little texture change. I'll submit whatever I can finish though, not gonna hold back cause some stuff might not be done even if it means not winning. :)

too bad I will be off and about when the contest entries get posted. I may not have internet for a while :( I was looking forward to seeing everyone kick my maps butt because I ran out of time to work on it and turned it in 2 weeks ago.
My videocard is broken, so hammer doesnt work :( and even if i get i a new videocard now i wont have time to finish the entry. so no entry from me :( ill just use my awesome idea for another competition :P
I had a strange dream last night, I had to dissalow something like half a dozen entries because they posted their submissions in here as though it was an upload thread rather than PMing them to me....teehee

That's funny. I'm wondering if you were one of those who was disqualified?
PinkPanther. Looking foward to seeing what you did, too bad you couldn't finish.
bomc, that sucks. If you order from newegg today you can have it installed in 2-3 days. That still leaves 4 days to finish. come on now... :D
I've started carving tiki's from wood. It's pretty fun, unfortunately that occupied wed so I cut myself short one workday.
all down to detailing but that's what usually takes the most time anyway.

No custom content allowed, that means no models, no textures, no skyboxes, etc, etc.
oh damn this line ruined my submission, I thought no skybox at all was allowed :P
but what the heck I'll send it anyway :P
BladeMasterPsi

no skybox is allow, but you can have a 3d skybox texture just not a whole separate skybox area ;)

Yea I was actually wondering this exact same question cause who's 20th is he talking about? Cause there is the point makers 20th, there is his 20th and then there is the servers 20th. I'm hoping it's the makers 20th cause I still have some texture work to do.

Welp, it's compiling now *crosses fingers* as soon as it's done, It's gonna be a PM straight to Youme! :):):):):) I'm so happy I got this finished. It's the best I have ever done so far IMO
# Everything must be finished and submitted in a PM to me before Monday 20th AprilWhat time is the deadline at?
You quoted the deadline. Before monday the 20th. Since its now gone 12 GMT(as of this post) it's already started 20th of monday everywhere in the world, which means you've missed the deadline.
Thanks for all the entries, I'll get them all sorted into one download and voting should start tonight :thumbup1:
which means you've missed the deadline.Oh well, I'm screwed then. So much for complicated texture alignment.
