Whoa, yeah. That's different. Now, everyone will probably play medic just to unlock all that stuff.

Meh, I dont like this idea, unless Valve starts keeping track of stats server-side or gets really strict with stat padders / stat hackers.
As it stands now your stats are stored on your hard drive and i would imagine since they are stored on your computer you can edit them. I know CoD4 stats can be hacked just by loading the game and changing some details in memory...
Also, not to mention I like TF2 the way it is... uncomplicated Rock-Paper-Scissors.
Very interesting. Personally, I don't enjoy playing the Medic - not enough action for me. But as the game is about teamwork, good coordination with several of these with heavies/pyros/soldiers and they can sweep through enemy defenses rather easily.

not so, I wen't to a friends house, logged in as me, ran TF2 and lo and behold, my stats from back home are there. stats and achievements are server side

I like medics, but they also feel a bit lacking where they stand now.
When I play medic it seems 90% of the time my uber is wasted because the person I am ubering doesnt know what to do. I uber a pyro and they chase people instead of running at a sentry, I uber a soldier and he just stands back shooting, I uber a demo man and he doesnt fire stickies.
Or, I am at 90% uber, and the stupid MoFo's run straight into the middle of the enemy base, then get pissy when I dont follow them.
BTW, here's a look at the full artwork shown in the article. By ~DrakeLake of DeviantArt.com.

it seems I shoulda read the article before making my post, but I still say acheivment padding is still to easy. Just create an empty server with bots (the dumbo ones that dont move), tape your mouse button down, and go walk away healing someone....

Stats don't count with bots anymore. Has to be 4 people on each team for it to work apparently.
Not that I see any benefit in stat padding? Woo you scored 18000 points in one life as a Heavy ... /unimpressed

That method will only get you a few of the new achievements, Many of the new medic achievements require you or the person your healing/killing to be in action.
And if they balance it correctly the new weapon shouldn't be at a huge advantage, it should just add more variety for the people who enjoy playing medic.
I'm also hoping it is largely irrelevant to the opposing team what weapon layout you use other than some small shifts in strategy or game plan.
For example who cares which medigun the medic is using (of the two we know). It doesn't change the role of the medic or what you'd do to counter them. Same applies to the people they overheal, just blast away at them like normal. It's only at the more advanced levels you may start to make small changes to your tactics based on enemy weapon choice.

It does bring up obvious imbalance questions, but I will wait for more information before worrying any more about it!

All I hope is that these new additions don't b0rk all our map that we've put so much effort into, that would suck

I think you say that because you haven't played medic enough :D I find playing medic (on a decent team) can be more intense than doing the shooting.
This whole thing sounds interesting though... I'm hoping some of the achievements are actually hard challenges for me, the ones now have been boringly simple. "Accumulate 25000 heal points"? ...uhh, often enough I can get that in a single map rotation. Even 1 million would probably be passed already for me.
In other stuff: seems it IS hunted they are making... but there is no hunted player, just a stupid mining cart :(

i hate valve. wow. completely stupid idea. what the heck are they doing to this game. they are going to ruin it. kinda makes me not want to even finish my map if the game is just going to become stupid like this. having to earn achievements to get a gun. thats just dumb. just release the gun if ur going to release a gun. they are going to base the game around achievements now which the achievements are a fun little add on for people but i could careless about them. i just love to play the game and win. shoot just take the HWGuys chaingun and have them get an achievement to carry more than 50bullets with me. so when this comes out everyone will be medic. thats awesome. looks like im taking a month or two off the game until everyone earns that achievement or i am going to be the only other class.
if they want to make the medic better. change the arc of the primary gun. i hate having to look up at the sun just to shoot a dude from 15yards away. its annoying as hell becuase then i dont even know if the dude is still there. change it so when ur looking straight ahead the gun is already shooting at an upward arc. i mean hell i can throw the damn things more straight and farther than that gun shoots them. u cant even get pointblank with that thing and hit someone without raising the gun because those things drop into the dirt so fast.
as for goldrush. one crit rocket and the whole team around the cart is dead. defense on that map will be so easy.
We could go make get your achievement map :)
And the mine cart some mapper was doing this already :)
Should that mapper be a valve employee? :)

I bet, if they fuck the game up, they are gonna downgrade it. It all depends on the community feedback.
We cant say stuff because we havent played it yet but we'll see.... I don't doubt valve but hmmm.. :D

As well it should. It's escort the vip from CS and TFC. More commonly known as 'gold rush' back in the Quake days. I for one am looking forward to this. Fingers crossed that Pyros get molatov cocktails :D

An "Overhealer" and a "healing ray"?
That would kinda suck. I play medic 80% of the time and I want a better GUN to frag people.
Because I get killed often (as thinking people kill the medic first), I have to walk to the action all time. One or two rogue enemies behind the lines and I am dead again.
Problem with the current gun is the firing distance (as stated by Kirko already). Although the arc is nice to take out sentry gun, that job is mostly done by the character I heal...
So to frag a character I have to get quite close and then I get killed.
I could of course run away, but that is not something this offensive doc is doing easily.

But the medic is supposed to be support and not be killing people. Medic is my most played class, and I'm fine with the idea so far, and actually do see myself using the overhealer even with a lack of uber since sometimes I'll go 5 lives without ever getting to use a charge for one reason or another, it's then that I'd rather just be more useful healing.

Agreed, the player who heals the medic should protect the medic first because it's all about teamwork.
Maybe medic can heal himself faster or... REVIVE FALLEN PLAYERS?

hmmm revive fallen players eh? not keen it could be quite dissorientating being effectively in spectator then all of a sudded you are resurrected nd playing again.

I don't like the idea at all. What Valve should be doing instead is working on new quality levels and try to balance every class, make the medic a little more rewarding to play with for example. Unlockables suck.

I would agree with you IF my team mates protect me. Most players don't play medic so they don't know their weaknesses. So I get killed protecting their asses.
And then I have to walk back to the action ALONE. That is my problem.
On a good team, I don't have no trouble not firing the gun but only heal. The max heal of 12899 is prove of that.

Unlockables rock, they can leave the levels to us :P

Well reviving, if the cam stayed around you when you didnt blow up in pieces (just the ragdoll) and the medic has a cool revive gun, It would be funny, although unbalanced now I think of it :p
Unless... medics can use it every 30 secs :D
MacNetron

Although I like the concept of reviving, I don't think it will work.
The couple of shooters I've played with reviving-able medics, there you have some state of "down but not dead yet". When the enemy sees such players, they make sure they go to state "really dead".
So in our case, "down but not dead yet" teammembers are at the front, where the action is. That is also the place where the medic is most vulnerable, especially when not moving...
EDIT: the ability to choose between uber and reviving might be better. In that case the medic is less vulnerable. And it would be limited and to-be-earned.
So ubering a corpse will revive him. The ultimate Dr. Frankenstein!!! "IT'S ALIVE"
