View Full Version : A word on prizes, and the purpose of contests

Before we actually get started, this is something I wanted to clarify. All of our contests, normal ones and otherwise, are made to provide some variety and inspiration for the mapping community. The reason I am bringing this up is because of the less than spectacular results of our Payload competition. Yes we had some really terrific maps. But we also had at least twice as many promising entries that just got burned out or discouraged for various reasons.

Part of this is the sheer amount of talent we have in this community. It's easy to be disheartened when the wip thread above yours has 5+ pages. I want to stress that you shouldn't be doing this for any prize, or to genuinely compete with others. There is no bad blood here, and we're all interested in the same thing. You should be doing this as a chance to focus your efforts, be a part of something huge, and hopefully improve your skills in the process. The prizes are just there as an incentive.

I am going to personally thank every single person who submits an entry. Yes we're giving out prizes to recognize the very best of the best. For everyone who doesn't win however, don't think for a second that you didn't submit a killer map. I realize that mapping is first and foremost a hobby. So interest comes and goes with the tide. But I would hate to see an author drop out for something as silly as "didn't feel I could compete with the others, what's the point?". If you have to quit because of real life stuff, that's a lot more understandable. So in short, I'm hoping a lot more people will see this through to the end :)

agreed, I'm curious to see what a custom gametype is...

I haven't bothered with any of the contest yet due to lack of interest. I've spent all my mapping time working on cp_confinement and it's custom gametype.

if one option is a custom gametype, I hope you don't mean plr although I suppose thats not custom. I don't have much motivation to help map for someone else's gametype either, I'm trying to establish my own. :S

I generally treat contests like this more of as something that will focus my creativity towards achieving some goal more than it is to try and "win" something. I'm assuming a lot of us mappers have a bunch of our own ideas floating around and sometimes it's just hard to narrow it all down and "just do it". Sometimes we all just need a push in the right direction, and contests can be that gentle shove.

This is why contests can be so great. They give a mapper some sort of specific "thing" to do with their mapping abilities, and as such, often make them to learn and improve by enforcing some sort of arbitrary restrictions (such as a theme, gametype, etc.).

Of course, the above for the rest of you mappers who will be losing to my superior abilities as I plan on completely destroying the whole lot of you :p

I am here to compete and not only for winning. I like to think that these contests are more like sharing your ideas and creativity with others and not only to win some $$££€€€. Although I haven't yet to participate in any contests here :P

You know, since this is a community contest there is no reason why the "best made" map would win necessary. For the summer contest I am going to be running full day events running only the contest maps and that will give a lot of non-map maker exposure to the contest maps.

I am sure my community will be involved in the voting process and I know my members will vote for the map that is the most fun, not the one that is the most aesthetically pleasing.

Probably just like the spu/sniper update revealing a few details, destroying a few reviving a few and come with a great result that will make 90% of the mappers rage :)
