View Full Version : Karma System?

I have noticed many other forum boards that use VBulletin have some sort of a karma system in place.
Basically, if someone is helpful and contributes to a thread, You can increase their karma
If someone is trolling, posting for the Lulz, or being a general asshat, you can decrease their karma.
This will help us have some way of self-policing ourselves, give us some way for newer people to recognize the really helpful people, and it might help some of our less positive members guard their tongues (or keyboards) a little bit better.
Any thoughts?

Do we have too much 'bad posts' then? That would be the reason to introduce 'karma' I suppose.
If not, then it doesn't add anything (IMHO)

reasonable idea, just don't go down the facepunch line of "everything must be spelt correctly" It really excludes dyslexics like myself.

Well.....
vB NATIVLY supports that in a feture called reputation
so its not like they need to hand code it
ya i'm ok with it as long as i get +100 points

I think it would be good!
And MacNetron we may not but there is no harm in using the system anyway then!

I have seen several posts on this forum that add nothing to the topic and instead only serve to incite unrest.
I have been on several other start-up boards that did nothing and the problem spiraled out of control. It starts off simply enough, but then if nothing is done we are left with people who think they can say anything and all they will get is a "Don't do that again" posted on the forum.
It can not hurt to have the system in place, hell, the place I go for programming advice has it, www.vbdotnetforums.com and that is hardly a place you are likely to find trolls.
Besides.... I think it would be a fun / easy addition.

I am not an admin, that is why I made this post requesting that it be turned on. We have yet to hear back from either Immortal-D or DrPepper, the only two people with that happy power. And of those two, DrPepper is the main person in charge of the website.

Here's an example.
Lets keep this civil and not make a point of trying to name names.
I do not want this to become personal or a debate of other peoples posts. So I realize some people in that thread are going to what to respond to phatal, but I urge you to just let it pass for the sanity of this thread.
I do not want this thread to go to hell. And phatal, I know you feel strongly about what you are posting but could you edit out that link so the situation at that link does not get worse.

There are many plug-ins i'd love to see on this site, This being one of them. =)

I think its a good idea. I was waiting for the right time to start implementing such features (karma, spam filters, etc).
Will look in to enabling it today. Oh and bad karma will be awarded for misspellings. :p

Is there an actual separate plug-in? Or are you referring to just the standard built in one?

I gave you some rep as well. This I think is a much needed system to truly give those who are really helpful notice.

Hmm ok this is sorta fine

because if thats off then its a usless system

its vbulletins internal system. the plugins i found were useless and no longer supported. ill keep my eye out for something better.
feel free to post suggestions/links to a better system.

Not sure if I really understood where you were going with that Deskalada, I think its a fairly basic algorithm where you click "Rep" then "Approve / Disprove" and it either makes your rep go +1 or -1.
Also, I am assuming that the little green dot thing under "Posts: ###" is the reputation meter, is there some way to see the exact ammount of reputation a person has?
DJive
01-29-2008, 09:15 AM
^^ i know Moderators and Admins are able to, im not sure if regular users are able to see the "exact" amount. Yes though, the more rep you have, the larger the bar gets as well as the mouse over wording.
ryodoan
01-29-2008, 09:34 AM
Alrighty, well, I suppose I can live with just having a bar and not knowing the exact amount for other people (you can see your own quantity by clicking on the "Rep" button for your own posts)

Yeah we're all on a distinguished road right now, lol.
Seeing some sort of rough figure would be nicer at least at the start because we are all the same.

Ehm, we shouldn't have the option to give negative reputation, a thanks system would be good, like game-artists.net. If you like sombody his post, thank him.
I mean, somebody gave me a minus because I said this: "Site is good, rating system is awfull." in the fpsbanana bullshit topic with the reply "lack of description."
This is just childish and removing the minus option gives a motivation of writing constructive posts imho.
ryodoan
02-09-2008, 10:55 AM
No, negative reputation the entire point. If you cant give negative reputation it defeats the purpose. I also disagree with your statement that removing the minus option will encourage more constructive posts. Generally if someone spends more than a sentence to elaborate their position, then it will not be rated low.
If someone is receiving a lot of negative reputation, there is a reason, and they should try to change their behavior.
Also, there will always be the few asshats that rate people low for little to no reason, this can not be avoided, but it is also a small minority, which I do not feel would swing anyones ratings one way or another.

did we start with 10? I've got 12 now, has taken a long time to go up by 2.

There is one problem, whenever I try to give rep for good posts it keeps saying "you must spread some reputation around before giving it to this member again" the problem with that is the same people are being deserving of rep over and over, and you can't keep giving it to them because there aren't enough people making good posts to "spread" enough.

w00t I got 11 rep!
(this might be a little off topic)
We use something similar at the ville. Ours is a "cash" mod, where people earn cash points to indicate their level of activity. You start out with 50 points and get points for posting. But the best thing is people donate points to you when you did something helpful. People offer stuff like "Hey B, Ill give 1000 points for that sig!" It also gives us the oppurtunity to "sell" stuff. For instance, we are holding a fun tournament, we could "charge" people x amount of points to sign up. That ensures the people signing up are forum regulars that will frequently check back for updates etc... There is no way for a user to take away points, only the moderators can. BUT, there is a way to red flag a post so people can rouse a mod if needed. Like your guys' "report" button.
IMO the rep should be displayed under the post count.
Rep/cash/karma what ever system is used, use something.... its good for a new guy to the forum to know who is who here.

Interesting. Whatever we end up using, I would like the # amount displayed instead of the little green box...
