Default Weird Water Problem

I haven't had this problem in anywhere else except in TF2. I have some water in my map and when I walk in it, my player lags while walking, but the game doesn't actually lag. It's like I'm getting caught on the water. How would I go about fixing this?

I'm not sure I completely understand your problem, but I'll take a guess based on my experiences with water.

It could be that your water depth is at a certain point where the engine has a difficult time trying to figure out whether you should be swimming or walking in it. If that's the case you may want to decrease the depth of your water if you want players to walk smoothly through it. The same problem will arise if a player crouches in water of an inappropriate depth.

Is everything set up by default?

tf2 water
tf2 skybox etc
cubemaps?

maybe its having an error with the splash/reflection as you walk through it

As of right now, the map is all indoors so I haven't touched the skybox parameter yet. It's the expensive 2fort water texture, cubemaps were built, both HDR and LDR, and the water is pretty shallow, like 24 hammer units at the deepest spots (theres a displacement under it)

I've heard or read somewhere that you must have a skybox in your map for water to function properly. Don't quote me on that, but add a skybox for kicks and see if it fixes your problem.

Also, try to make the water 32 units.

I don't know where I heard this from, but I recall that for some reason or another.

Well the actual water brush is higher than that, but the displacement covers the bottom half or so of it.

Check the water texture scale is on 1.0 rather than the default 0.25.
