Default skylight/hole

hey guys

first off my whole map is in a cave sort of setting so that explains why i have this in it.

ok in the roof of the cave i want a "hole" so that the light from outside can come into the cave. my map is nearly ready to be testing without a huge box around it (that was testing purposes scale etc) but the only problem is the roof of the cave is a displacment so it has no other side. i wondered if there was any other way of sealing it as the skybox wouldnt go threw the rock in real life =\ lol.
or do i have to redo the whole roof with the other side?....

thanks in advance

nossie

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you want a hole in your roof you will need to make it out of several displacements. There's no easy way around it unfortunately. It's all tedious and time consuming

Do you have any screen shots?

will you have to be seeing your cave from the outside? if there is a hole in the roof, just put in a playerclip so they cant get through so the player never gets to see it from the outside, then you dont need to build an outside cavewall, and the engine doesn't have to render one.

Just make sure you have nodraw brushes behind all your displacements and surrounding the square of skybox you'll probably have.

That's why its generally a good idea to do displacement work as far towards the end of your map as possible, I find the earlier I do it the more problems crop up.
