Custom textures

This is a very stupid question, but when i download custom textures, where do i need to put them? I tried materials directory, but in hammer they were purple/black squared textures. Google couldnt help me it showed only how to create textures but not where to place them.

Are the materials in folders themselves? Or are they just .VTFs and .VMTs? Pretty sure they need to be put in a folder that's within the Materials folder.

Going by memory, as I am at school right now.

Oh sorry, everythink is ok i copied them without the folder where they were in.
