Default How to get a Wiki Cap

Team Fortress Wiki: Wiki Cap guidelines

To find out who already owns one, see the list of Wiki Cap owners.

Wiki Caps are awarded to valuable contributors to the Official Team Fortress Wiki.

There are certain eligibility guidelines in place. While the hat is available as a reward to valuable editors, its main purpose is to provide incentive to editors to increase the quality and breadth of information on the wiki. Thus, it requires some degree of effort on your part if you are interested in obtaining it.

Eligibility guidelines

As a general guide, the current recipients share the following qualities:

*Demonstrate a strong desire to help improve and update the Wiki through useful edits and contributions.
*Participate in the community by contributing to discussion. We also have an IRC channel where you can get to know and become part of the regulars!
*Adhere to the policies and practices of the Official Team Fortress 2 Wiki, including observing the style guide and the official policies.
*Roughly 400 or more edits. If you are having trouble finding things to do, take a look at the tasks list.

Note: It's incredibly easy to determine if individuals are spamming edits to artificially inflate their edit count. Edit spammers will jeopardize their chances at earning the hat.

*Properly implement licenses on images, sounds, and any other kinds of uploads, media or otherwise.
*Been around a little while. 2 months or more.

Note that these are simply guidelines. There will be exceptions. If you feel you missed out by mistake, you can contact any of the people with green names in the recent changes feed and we can have a look.

Technical information

*Our resident bot WindBOT periodically compiles a list potential candidates based on a number of rules. As the rules are quite complex, it's only used as a guide. Appearance or absence from the list does not guarantee your eligibility.
*At least one Wiki Cap will be distributed per week. This means the hat is accessible and regularly available.

Hey, is there any chance you can consider work done on the Valve Developer Wiki as well?

'Cause spending a few days using a hex-editor on MDL files or figuring out the exact hierarchical inheritance rules for FGD elements is advancing the state of knowledge, even if it doesn't mean many edits

Only for the TF2 Wiki, my love.

If you know some languages that aren't English you can basically edit tons of stuff (even though there's people just copy-pasting Google Translate nonsense into there). Not sure how they're going to count this though - painstakingly finding small mistakes won't up your "biterate" a whole lot, but might be more work than writing three sentences.

Community weapons get handed out for any number of reasons, so I don't see why a "wiki cap" wouldn't be awarded to someone making significant contributions to the other official Valve wiki.
Regardless of what the tf wiki people say, including the "Wiki Caps are awarded to valuable contributors to the Official Team Fortress Wiki." (which I assume is just an offhand description made without even considering the VDC), I would be surprised if valve would refuse to hand it out for considerable work done at the VDC.

Valve doesn't hand the Wiki Caps out.

The only way to get one, and the only way that there ever will be, is to do work on the Official TF2 Wiki.

You're telling me one of the wiki staff has the magic button that puts hats into people's accounts?

edit: actually, nevermind that. My point still stands. Even if valve doesn't, they still can hand them out if they wanted to.
